Animal suffer and the Civilizing Process
A Humanities, Social Science & Health project
My PhD will evolve around Norbert Elias’ ‘On the Process of Civilization’ and its missing point which is animals. The research will evaluate people’s attitudes towards animal suffering over the centuries, and will analyze these approaches in the scope of meat industry, animal experiments and captivity. It will take into consideration the extent to which animal civilizing process impacts politics, economy and sociology.

What is your motivation for doing a PhD?
I would like to work in policy making in regards to animal experiments and animal captivity.
Why did you choose your research topic/title
I want to provide better conditions of living and respect for animals.
MA Merit from Aberystwyth University in International Relations. Awaiting acceptance on article publication in a peer reviewed journal.
What difference will this research make in your life and the lives of others?
The research will argue that the civilizing process is as much visible in terms of animal suffering as it is in human suffering. Its purpose is to educate people about suffering that animals have to endure for meat, research and entertainment, so that laws and practices can be altered in favour of animals. It will bring more awareness of animal suffering and also a change in policies as well as mindsets.
