Projects: Fundraising and Commerce

FundmyPhD is a platform where Project Creators run campaigns to fund PhD projects by offering rewards (Perks) to raise money from Funders. By creating a fundraising campaign on FundmyPhD, you as the Project Creator are offering the public the opportunity to enter into a contract with you. By backing a fundraising campaign on FundmyPhD, you as the Funder accept that offer and the contract between Funder and Project Creator is formed. FundmyPhD is not a party to that agreement between the Funder and Project Creator. All dealings are solely between Users.

By funding or creating a PhD fundraising campaign on FundmyPhD, you agree to be bound by this entire Agreement, including the following terms:

  • Funders agree to provide their payment information at the time they pledge to a campaign. The payment will be collected at or after the campaign deadline money pledged as of the. The amount Funders pledge is the amount they will be charged.
  • Funders consent to FundmyPhD and its payments partners authorizing or reserving a charge on their payment card or other payment method for any amount up to the full pledge at any time between the pledge and collection of the funds.
  • Funders agree to have sufficient funds or credit available at the campaign deadline to ensure that the pledge will be collectible.
  • Funders may increase, decrease, or cancel their pledge at any time during the fundraising campaign, except that they may not cancel or reduce their pledge if the campaign is in its final 24 hours and the cancellation or reduction would drop the campaign below its goal.
  • The Estimated Delivery Date listed on each perk is not a promise to fulfill by that date, but is merely an estimate of when the Project Creator hopes to fulfill by.
  • Project Creators agree to make a good faith attempt to fulfill each perk by its Estimated Delivery Date.
  • For all campaigns, FundmyPhD gives to the Project Creator each Funders’ User ID and pledge amount. For successful campaigns, FundmyPhD additionally gives to the Project Creator each Funders name and email.
  • For some perks, the Project Creator needs further information from Funders, such as a mailing address or t-shirt size, to enable the Project Creator to deliver the perk. The Project Creator shall request the information directly from Funders at some point after the fundraising campaign is successful. To receive the perk, Funders agree to provide the requested information to the Project Creator within a reasonable amount of time.
  • FundmyphD does not offer refunds. A Project Creator is not required to grant a Funders request for a refund unless the Project Creator is unable or unwilling to fulfill the reward.
  • Project Creators are required to fulfill all perks of their successful fundraising campaigns or refund any Funders whose reward they do not or cannot fulfill.
  • Project Creators may cancel or refund a Funder’s pledge at any time and for any reason, and if they do so, are not required to fulfill the reward.
  • Because of occasional failures of payments from Funders, FundmyPhD cannot guarantee the receipt by Project Creators of the amount pledged minus fees.
  • FundmyPhD and its payments partners will remove their fees before transmitting proceeds of a campaign. Fees may vary depending on region and other factors.
  • FundmyPhD reserves the right to cancel a pledge at any time and for any reason.
  • FundmyPhD reserves the right to reject, cancel, interrupt, remove, or suspend a campaign at any time and for any reason. FundmyPhD is not liable for any damages as a result of any of those actions. FundmyPhD’s policy is not to comment on the reasons for any of those actions.
  • Project Creators should not take any action in reliance on having their project posted on the Site or having any of the money pledged until they have the ability to withdraw and spend the money via their accredited university. There may be a delay between the end of a successful fundraising campaign and access to the funds.

FundmyPhD is not liable for any damages or loss incurred related to perks or any other use of the Service. FundmyPhD is under no obligation to become involved in disputes between any Users, or between Users and any third party arising in connection with the use of the Service. This includes, but is not limited to, delivery of goods and services, and any other terms, conditions, warranties, or representations associated with campaigns on the Site. FundmyPhD does not oversee the performance or punctuality of projects. The Company does not endorse any User Submissions. You release FundmyPhD, its officers, employees, agents, and successors in rights from claims, damages, and demands of every kind, known or unknown, suspected or unsuspected, disclosed or undisclosed, arising out of or in any way related to such disputes and the Service.

Fees and Payments

Joining FundmyPhD is free. However, we do charge fees for certain services. When you use a service that has a fee you have an opportunity to review and accept the fees that you will be charged. Changes to fees are effective after we provide you with notice by posting the changes on the Site. You are responsible for paying all fees and taxes associated with your use of the Service.

If a project is successfully funded, FundmyPhD applies a 5% fee to the funds collected & if the project is not successfully funded the fee increases to 9% of the funds collected.

In the UK, pledges are processed securely through a third-party payments processor (PayPal). The payment system fees are 5% plus £0.05 for pledges of less than £10, and 3% plus £0.20 for pledges of £10 or greater.

We are happy to transfer funds to overseas students however any bank charges or currency conversion fees for this service will be incurred by the campaign creator & deducted from the final campaign total before transfer of the funds occur.

Funders should be aware that although it is possible to support a Campaign from outside the UK, the cost of conducting international transactions can be considerably higher than that of domestic transactions. These extra costs vary from country to country, include variations in foreign exchange rates and therefore may more than offset the value of Cash Benefits featured in each Campaign.

FundmyPhD, through its payment service providers, may require a surcharge or service charge for the extra costs of processing international payments from Funders, and this may impact the overall Returns of supporting a Campaign. If any surcharge or service charge is applied it will be line with the fees that payments schemes and Funders’ banks apply to international card payments. It is the responsibility of the Funder to be aware of the any service charge or surcharges applicable to their Contribution.

FundmyPhD reserves the right to amend its fees from time to time. FundmyPhD will notify Funders of any changes to its fees by posting a notice on the Website. It is the User’s responsibility to ensure that it checks the current fee schedule prior to creating any Campaign or contributing to any Campaign.

See PayPal website for additional information on charges & fees  https://www.paypal.com/uk/webapps/mpp/paypal-fees

On our FundmyPhD website every PhD student asking for funding will be required to create a campaign page detailing their research project & will be required to tell potential funders (donors) about the benefits of their research & why they are conducting their research. Students can upload supporting documentation such as YouTube video & PowerPoint presentations etc.

Before starting a campaign each students credentials will be verified by us as there is a requirement for them to upload proof that they are enrolled at a university (or an accredited educational institution) as a PhD student or that they have a letter of intent of starting a PhD programme. The student will open an account by registering their personal information with us before they can start a campaign on the crowdfunding platform.

The Funder (donor) will give money on a voluntary basis if they like the project with no financial return. The student does have the option to offer  funders ‘perks’ (rewards) for donating such as; updates on the progress of the project via a newsletter or a dedication in the published thesis, maybe even a promotional pen or T-shirt etc but definitely not monetary/financial rewards (see above for full list of prohibited perks). The funder is made aware of how the website works as we have the following pages on the website; ‘how it works’, ‘support a student’, ‘frequently asked questions’, ‘terms of use’, ‘privacy rights’ & if you require any further information there is a ‘contact us’ link at the bottom of the homepage

The Funder (donor) will not get any financial return on their donation to the students PhD campaign as all money is given on a voluntary basis. There is no equity share for any potential Funders (donors) in the students PhD research.

Any donations pledged to a campaign will be held until the end of the campaign (campaign limit is currently set at no more than 60 days although we are recommending student to run their campaigns for no more than 30 days). The money would then be collected via our online payment gateway (which supports donations through Pay Pal & major credit/debit cards) & the funds donated would be sent to the student’s bank account or PayPal account depending on their preference. There is a risk of any student not completing their PhD programme. Should this be the case the Funder has donated the money at their own risk.

If the crowdfunding platform collapses mid campaign then no money would be taken from any Funders (donors) as the money is not drawn until the end of the campaign.

All money donated on the FundmyPhD website is given on a purely voluntary basis
